The Bibliometric and Informetric Research Group is a centre of expertise where research on many aspects of scholarly communication, including publication and research activity, is conducted. Characteristics of research are explored within the theoretical frameworks of scientometrics and with special attention to the sociological aspects of scholarly communication, productivity, performance, quality and impact of research. The group also investigates aspects of information seeking behaviour, information retrieval, citer motivation, and the use and flow of information in the web environment. In recent years, BIRG has explored issues in education for the information disciplines which cover matters such as program, course and curriculum, educational reform, workplace expectations and requirements.
Established in 1998, BIRG became part of the School of Information Systems, Technology and Management (SISTM) in 1999 following the merger of the School of Information, Library and Archive Studies (SILAS) with the School of Information Systems.
